Summary 7th World Tantra Yoga Festival 2022:
Day 1: Shivaratri
From the auspicious day of Maha Shivaratri, our festival officially started. We performed a comprehensive Shiva puja in the morning in our Shiva temple, as we all made an offering and chanted many stotram and mantra for Shiva, to invoke the Shiva consciousness from inside. After, we performed Havana (fire ceremony).
After noon, over 100 guests arrived to enjoy our program. There were many performances of dance, kirtan, bajan, mantra and speech. The Machhegaun band performed traditional Nepali music on which everyone danced together. After, everyone could enjoy delicious Prasad, prepared by the ashram.
‘Shiva’ represents the higher consciousness and ‘ratri’ refers to the night. Thus, the sadhana on Shivaratri happens throughout the whole day and night. At our Havana kunda, the whole night there was a fire so our guests could meditate around.
Day 2: Boudhanath & Pashupathinath
In the morning, our regular sadhana continued with morning chanting, Havana and yoga practice. In the morning, we took some time for relaxing after a busy previous day.
After lunch, we left the ashram to visit Boudhanath stupa. Boudhanath stupa is a Tibetan stupa, of which its massive mandala makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal and the world. We spent some time at Boudhanath, visiting the area and then left for our evening program at Pashupathinath.
Pashupathinath is the main temple of Shiva, and therefore the main temple for yogis. It is the location in which the discourse between Shiva and Parvati took place. In this discourse, Shiva gave the science of yoga to Parvati. From this moment, yoga was introduced to the world.
We walked around the big temple area and visited the place where Goraknath (direct disciple of Matsyendranath and Shiva, establisher of Hatha yoga), used to meditate. We visited a few other powerful spots and then joined the aarti (big worship to Shiva).
Day 3: Bhaktapur
In the morning we performed our regular sadhana with morning chanting in the temple, Havana and yoga practice.
After breakfast, we drove to Bhaktapur. Bhaktapur is known for its Durbar square and area full of ancient temples and ancient wood carving. We spent the day visiting the Durbar Square and visiting various temples around the area.
We took darshan at the temple of Dattatreya and were invited inside the property of a traditional wood carver. He showed us his work, as he carved the stories of all incarnations of Buddha, the 64 yoginis, Avataras and Gods into wood.
We took some Dahi (famous curd from Bhaktapur), ended with a meditation and returned to the ashram.
Day 4: Drive to Pokhara
After our daily morning sadhana with chanting, Havana and yoga practice, we headed to Pokhara in our minivan. Arrived in Pokhara, we checked in the hotel and made an evening walk throughout the city.
Day 5: Visiting temples in Pokhara
The morning started with our regular yoga sadhana, on the roof of the hotel, with a clear Himalayan view. After, we enjoyed breakfast at our favorite vegetarian restaurant, who is already providing food for our Pokhara program for many years!
We visited the Tal Barahi temple on the middle of the lake, where we went by boat. We took darshan and enjoyed satsang, surrounded by the peaceful water, beautiful mountains and sound of the temple bells.
After the Tal Barahi temple, we took lunch and continued to the next temple: Hanuman mandir. We visited the local ashram and sang the Hanuman chalisa and kirtan in front of the Hanuman shrine.
Day 6: Hike to World Peace Pagoda and Shiva statue
In the morning, we performed our regular morning yoga on the roof of the hotel. After, we took a big brunch as we had a big hike on our program. Through the forest, we hiked to the World Peace Pagoda, established by Japanese Buddhist monks. After, we hiked further towards a big Shiva Statue, still partly in construction. Again, we were very lucky with the clear Himalayan view and the view from the top was beyond beautiful. The whole project of this big statue is established by a small community of locals, who were very dedicated. It has more than 216 Shivalingams and is 54 feet high. We performed a meditation at the location and then descended down to enjoy a well-deserved dinner.
Day 7: Paragliding and continuing to Damauli
In the morning, those who were interested to fly went for paragliding. They were lucky with the clear Himalayan view and had an unforgettable experience.
After the paragliding, we enjoyed our last meal at our favorite vegetarian restaurant and continued our journey towards Damauli.
In Damauli, we visited the Ved Vyas cave, where the rishi Ved Vyas meditated, who composed the Vedas. A special place with a beautiful energy. We visited the local ashrams at either side of the Ganga, and enjoyed kirtan, aarti, satsang and Prasad.
Day 8: Program in Damauli and drive to Gorkha
This day we had an early wake up to perform yoga sadhana together with the local ashram at the side of the Ganga. After this collective sadhana, we took a bath in the Ganga and everyone had the opportunity to perform his own meditation/mantra sadhana at the side of the river, as its effect amplifies in this holy environment.
We received Prasad from the ashram and their disciples took us to another cave and temple, where Ved Vyas and other rishis used to meditate.
Full of good energy, we continued our journey towards Gorkha, where Bibas Shrestha and Bharti Thapa organized the program and accommodation. After checking in the hotel, we went to the royal palace of Gorkha, where the cave is located where Goraknath appeared (establisher Hatha yoga). We enjoyed the powerful energy of the place and hiked further upwards to the shrine of Bajra Bhairav. Here, we meditated at sunset.
Day 9: Program in Gorkha and drive to Chitwan
In Gorkha, we enjoyed morning sadhana. The morning yoga felt extra strong as the energy of Saint Goraknath was around. After, we received a tour from Bibas, showing us the national museum and local temples, showing the history of Nepal. We returned to the royal palace to once more feel the strong energy of Goraknath, and arrived exactly at the moment in which they were performing rituals in his cave. To receive his energy, we stayed on the location to perform meditation.
We are very grateful for our hosts Bibas and Bharti, for taking care of our program in Gorkha. After a delicious lunch, we continued our journey towards Chitwan.
Day 10: Safari in Chitwan
After busy previous days, we enjoyed a relaxed morning in which everyone was free to do his own practice. Surrounded by rice fields, one could enjoyed the stillness and morning peace.
We gathered together for brunch and went for a four-hour jeep safari. We were very lucky and saw three rinos, a bear, deer, wild pigs, peacocks, crocodiles, an elephant and various colorful birds!
Day 11: Devghat and return to Kathmandu
An early wake up to go to Devghat, the place where the Trisuli and the Kali Gandaki rivers merge to form the Narayani, a major tributary of the Ganga (Ganges). This place is known for its spiritual power and welcoming everyone to perform their practice towards realization. It is one of the major places people visit when they are on pilgrimage. Is has various ashrams with many gurukul students, who grow up to become an instrument for god. We were blessed to have satsang with one aghore, who introduced us his mantra and taught us about chakra practices.
One of his teachings: “It does not matter from which background you are and what you did in the past, it is all to be left behind. All what matters is your sadhana, your practice, that you are doing right now”.
After, we joined the brunch together with all other gurukul students of the ashram. The whole dining hall was filled with yogis, chanting mantra before eating.
After brunch, we continued exploring the place and came to the cave of guru Vasishta (the guru of Rama). We got darshan and continued to another cave where Sita (the spouse of Rama) disappeared from the world. At this location lives a female sadhu, who already lives in the cave for 17 years. We were blessed to have satsang with her and we left with a baggage full of true wisdom.
Lastly, we took a dive in the Ganga and departed back to Kathmandu.
